In 1893, Lloyd Mathews built the prison. The prison idea was to send violent criminals from the Tanganyika mainland to the Prison Island. The Prison Island ended up being used as a quarantine center, instead of a prison, for yellow fever epidemics that once raged through the region.

Prison Island remained in the ownership of the government which converted the newer quarantine buildings into a guest house.

The authentic experience of preparing the Zanzibar traditional food will start at our local central market of Darajani where you will get a chance to do shopping of the ingredients of the menu of your choice with my presence, I shall assist you in negotiating the price and carry the ingredients. What I love most about this tour it gives a colorful experience of how Swahili cuisine is prepared.

The menu will include supu ya Pweza (Octopus soup), Urojo (Zanzibar Mixer), Pilau, Biriani, Samaki Pweza, or Kuku wa Kupaka (Coated Chicken) and Kamba wa Nazi (Coconut Prawns). The menu can include the desserts like Visheti and Kashata (Sweeties) alongside exotic juices from exotic fruits like Bungo , Starfruits, and coconut juices.
