Lucerne is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama, close to Mount Rigi, Mount Pilatus, Titlis and Stanserhorn. The medieval city is situated directly on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The world wide known landmark of Lucerne, the medieval Chapel Bridge with its defensive tower and the fortification, the Water Tower, are in the heart of Lucerne and are considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. Another landmark of the town is the Museggmauer, a fortification wall which could have been preserved partly in its original, well-fortified state. Historic houses decorated with frescoes, Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic churches make Lucerne worth seeing. The Jesuit church dating from the 17th century is regarded as Switzerland's first sacral Baroque building. The Lion's Monument with the dying lion, where 800 Swiss Guards died during the French Revolution is one of the most attractive and well known monuments in Switzerland.
