The Old Town of Bern, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is rich in history and charm. Founded in 1191 by Duke Berthold of Zahringen, the city was named after the first animal he hunted—a bear, which remains its symbol. As we explore, we’ll pass by the grand Parliament building and enjoy scenic views of the Aare River, which winds through the city. We’ll also stop at a historical restaurant, famous for a story where French invaders supposedly drowned in wine—an intriguing tale from Bern’s past. A visit to one of Bern’s top chocolate shops will offer a taste of the finest Swiss chocolate, going beyond just the famous Toblerone, which was created here. We’ll visit 4(!) monuments dedicated to Albert Einstein, who lived in Bern during his time as a patent clerk and made groundbreaking contributions to science. Bern’s medieval charm is visible in its cobbled streets, iconic clock tower, and picturesque arcades, giving a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage and its role in shaping Swiss history.
We’ll meet in the lobby of the hotel des Balances. Walk to the Lucerne train station. Travelling to Bern (1H) At the train station of Bern will begin our walking tour through Bern’s charming Old Town, with a delightful stop for tea at a historic café. As we wander through this medieval city, you’ll be immersed in its Renaissance fountains, narrow streets, and towering landmarks: • The Zytglogge (Clock Tower), a symbol of Bern’s rich history. • The Parliament Building, home to Switzerland’s government. • The Bear Park, a peaceful spot to discover the city’s fascinating wildlife. These iconic sights are essential stops when exploring the Swiss capital. Did you know that Albert Einstein lived in Bern from 1902 to 1909, where he developed his groundbreaking Theory of Relativity? Or that the Bernese Minster boasts the tallest church spire in Switzerland? If you’d like a more personalized experience, feel free to reach out and I’d be happy to tailor the tour to your interests.
