The Woodland Cemetery is beautiful all year round, much due to the unique landscape. When the cemetery took shape at the beginning of the 20th century, the ambition was to create something special -a burial site where nature and architecture goes hand in hand. Today, it is considered one of the most important creations of modern architecture and it is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Monument. Stockholm's city council decided that a new cemetery should be built south of the city, and not again designed as "Gardens of the dead". In 1914 the Cemetery Committee announced an international architectural competition where the contestant would take advantage of the area's topography and forest. The area would also be easily oriented for the visitor. First prize went to the 30-year-old architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. Their competition proposal "Tallum" was the only one that made the Nordic forest the main experience.
Our tour would start at Central station, Stockholm or at your hotel. We ride the metro to Skogskyrkogården and walk through the entrance of the cemetery. When we get inside the walls, the landscape opens up. The first thing we notice is the large granite cross and the lack of graves. The architects have created a completely new kind of landscape. We climb the stairs up to Almhöjden to get the best view of the area. We continue down the road of "seven wells" and then see the Forest Chapel, the Resurrection Chapel and Greta Garbo's grave. Finally, we stop at the chapel of the Holy Cross and give a thought at the architect Gunnar Asplund's own grave. After completing the tour, we travel back with the metro to the center again.
