Although it was founded by the Romans, Cordoba has been always known to be one of the greatest capitals of Al-Andalus, since the VIII to the XI century. Once the most populated city in Europe, Cordoba in that era could be compared with the greatness of Bagdad, Constantinople, Cairo, Alexandria or Damascus. The importance of the capital of the Omeyyades's Caliphate was such that many historians now agree that in Cordoba you could find the roots of scientific renaissance, figures as Ben Moses Maimon or Averroës are part of this legacy of culture. During this period the great Aljama Mosque of Cordobawas built, known today to be used as a Cathedral. Most of the original structure survived, so we can admire the beauty of the islamic architecture on this tour, and then find a church built in the center of the building, making it a perfect blend. Of course, the jewish quarter and Sinagogue of Cordoba will be also included in this beautiful visit.
-After picking you up from your lodging, we'll leave from Seville in the morning, departing on an hour and a half drive. -Once we get to Cordoba, we'll cross the Roman bridge and see the original mills that are still preserve on the Guadalquivir river. -Next, we'll visit Cordoba's Mosque-Cathedral, where we will discuss the original shape of the building, checking also the ways in which it was enlarged during the time of the Caliphate. ·We'll also be checking out the Mihrab mosaic and end by the new addition of the Renaissance church in the centre. -Afterwards, we'll proceed to cover the Jewish quarter, in which we could find a historical Synagogue, one of the only two preserved in the South of Spain. ·Next, we will go up to the city walls, which are in an incredible good shape: Puerta de Almodóvar del Río. -At last, we'll travel back to Sevilla, where we'd arrive in the afternoon.
