Garnata Al-Yahud was a wellknown jewish community when the Arabs came to Granada and founded their city in 1013. We have some eloquent documents about the medieval times. We start our tour in the Albayzin. It seems that the first jewish community lived in this quarter, which is nowadays known as the old arabic quarter. Especially in the 11 th century existed a rich communication between these two cultures. I will give you some good examples. We walk through the Albayzin with its narrow streets and wonderful views to the Alhambra, which is on the hill just in front. Down in the the valley next to the Darro river is the Realejo where the latest jewish community settled. Although there isn't any synagogue left I will use again documents and a statue to revive the jewish community. We end in the economic and religious center of Granada where the former silk market and the rests of a Medrese talk about the importance that had the silk production and the education for the Jews in Granada.
We start the tour at the viewing point of Saint Cristobal. Here I will introduce you in the interesting jewish heritage and history of Garnata Al-Yahud. We will stroll through the narrow streets of this old arabic quarter right into the heart of the Albayzin. I will use more than once medieval hebrew poems to recreate the atmosphere of the quarter and show you were the historians believe that there lived the first jewish community. On our way we will stop at Saint Nicolas, from which we can enjoy the best view of the Alhambra. We continue our way down the hill and we will see the typical houses of the historical quarters of Granada, the Carmenes. You will learn about its origin and caracteristics. They are like little paradises. Finally we reach the Plaza Nueva. We will enter in the quarter where there lived the last jewish community before they were expelled in 1492. At the statue of Yehuda Ibn Tibbon we will learn about his importance for the Jews. We finish the tour in the former silk market and Medrese
