Located near Madrid, the iconic Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a majestic building looming over you, evoking another era, when El Escorial was the political centre of the Spanish Empire. This architectural gem, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, was ordered to be built by Felipe II in the 16th century to commemorate the Battle of San Quintín . The entire complex is made up of a Monastery, a Basilica, a Palace, the Royal Pantheon of the kings, (where centuries of Spanish royalty are buried), an art gallery, a library, an architectural museum and beautiful gardens. We will explore the amazing complex of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, admire one of the most beautiful libraries in Europe and dive into Spanish Renaissance history with it's secrets and symbolism. We will also visit the beautiful gardens, enjoy the town squares and have the best view from la Silla de Felipe II (the King's place) surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Guadarrama mountains.
I will pick you up from your accommodation in Madrid and we will drive with my car (max 4 people) or with a private Minivan to the heart of the Guadarrama mountain. We will start visiting the little town of El Escorial and continue with the visit of the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial: -Library -Basilica -Royal Pantheon -Palace -Gardens At lunch time, we will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the excellent gastronomy at the Town Square. We will finish our stay at San Lorenzo with the most impressive view of the majestic building and the mountains and drive back to Madrid. We can extend the trip by also visiting the Valley of Cuelgamuros (previously called "Valley of the Fallen"), the monumental complex built by the dictator Franco to hold his remains and 33, 833 combatants from both sides, hence its description as "the largest mass grave in Spain". Since 2019 Francos remains were transferred to a private cementery.

My private car. A Mazda CX-30 with leader seats. There are other options: 1. Private Minivan with chauffeur: typically Mercedes, 2. Minivan Clase V, 3. Train: it would also be feasible to do it from the Atocha station. It will be a bit cheaper, but it will have other inconveniences like walking from the train station to the city centre, nor being able to get to the viewpoints, etc. Let me know if you want to see these options before taking a decision.
