We all know Picasso’s masterpiece, but what about the city of Gernika? In 1364, Gernika becomes the meeting place of the six important leaders of the area known as Biskaia. The ancient oak tree and the cathedral are the symbols of the Basque Country; they claim, that there was when the first democratic procedures of Spain took place. In April 1937, Nazis airplanes bombed and destroyed the city. Nowadays, with the Assembly House(1833) and the Peace Museum, Gernika is looking at the future, but without forgetting its past. This tour is for the visitors who want to see where the bombing took place, learn about the story of the city, the bombing and Picasso’s masterpiece, Guernika. The ride will let you enjoy the fantastic Urdaibai landscape and estuary. After visiting Gernika, we’ll visit Mundaka, a small village, mostly famous for its constant tide and waves, mainly the left wave. The view of the estuary there is breath-taking! We’ll have lunch in Mundaka or Bermeo, the first fishing port of Vizcaya.
We’ll visit: - The Assembly House with the sacred oak tree. - The Europe nations Park with its famous sculptures. - The Museum of Peace where we’ll experience the bombing testimony of Begona. - The main square where we’ll enter an authentic bunker from 1937 and experience an bombardment simulation. - Picasso’s Gernika imitation and talk about the symbolism of the painting. - Then, a break with a coffee and a pintxo in the central square like the locals do. - After, we’ll visit Mundaka, the surfing village and the Urdaibai delta. Lunch in Mundaka or Bermeo, depending of the availability of the restaurants.
