Starting at the stunning Hospital Sant Pau, we will see how architect Domènech I Montaner gave as much importance to aesthetics as functionality. He firmly believed in the healing power of nature-inspired art & beauty, an approach found in every detail. The concept of a "beautiful hospital" is unique & thought-provoking by definition, but was even more spectacular in industrial Barcelona. As we leave the Hospital we come face-to-face with Gaudi's awe-inspiring Sagrada Familia, where again you will see a magnificent showcase of nature in art, this time in the form of religious architecture. We will admire the wealth of detail of this forest-like temple, Gaudi's final work, which with its luminosity strives to crown the city with the promise of redemption. These two outstanding Modernist architects had two different architectural objectives -medical & religious- but in achieving their objectives were both guided by the highest sensitivity for nature, art, faith & healing. A mesmerizing Art Nouveau immersion!
This unforgettable tour takes you to two of the city's most exclusive and treasured gems. We will meet at Bar Insolita Gea (C/ de Sant Antoni Maria Claret), and head to our first destination, the glorious Hospital Sant Pau. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which also boasts the title of the world's largest Art Nouveau complex, you will travel through time as we dive into industrial Barcelona, the Sanitary Movement and the fascinating Modernist movement of the late XIX. The journey continues as we leave the hospital and come face-to-face with our second spectacular destination, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, directly connected to the hospital by the beautiful, pedestrian Avenida de Gaudi. At the magnificent basilica we will continue our voyage through Art Nouveau excellence, this time in the form of one of the world's most singular (and as yet, unfinished) churches, testimony to Gaudi's genius (or madness). We will explore its wondrous exterior and interior, packed with symbolism, aesthetics & the finest detail.
