Most visitors to Alcoy, 60 kilometres inland from Alicante, come to view the 10,000 year old rock paintings. But those who linger will discover this medium-sized Spanish city has plenty to offer, including well-preserved medieval architecture, succulent cuisine and hospitable residents. Take an Alcoy private tour and dig deep to uncover the region's treasures with a local guide. The famous cave paintings are located in La Sarga. Taking a knowledgeable guide will ensure you receive an explanation of the artistic process, which involved first tracing outlines and subsequently filling in the color. Return to Alcoy for a look at the Castell de Bartxell, built in the 12th century by the Moors, before clambering up to the Torre de Na Valora, the city's watchtower. When hunger strikes, head to the atmospheric Victor Bar, serving homemade tapas since 1930. Return to the coast via the very scenic - and very twisty! - road to Benidorm.
