For millennia, Niš was where the forces of Europe and Asia collided. From its early days as a Roman garrison town, this Serbian city has dealt with marauding Huns, competing empires and fragmenting nations, each of which left their mark. Take a private Niš tour and explore the "Emperor's city" with a local guide. There have been humans here since Neolithic times, but the city really took off during the reign of Constantine the Great. Walk in the footsteps of wealthy Romans at the Mediana, where your guide can lead you down ancient pathways to view a luxurious villa, bathhouse, water tower and granary. Next, head to Ćele Kula, where you can see a tower made of the skulls of Serbian fighters who rose up against Ottomans…and paid the ultimate price. Those who can stomach it should visit Crveni Krst, a former concentration camp, for a sobering look at the horrors of war. Return to Niš for a traditional meal of Ćevapčići - grilled meat - washed down with Jelen Pivo, Serbia's best beer.
