Grand Mansions and Sailors' Lodgings: The Architecture of Salem, Massachusetts

The House of the Seven Gables is a most unusual example of a grand house surviving from the first century of New England settlement. In dwellings like this great merchants and political leaders lived and carried on their own pursuits and government business. Its steep roofs and many gables recall English manor houses of the same period.

The Narbonne House, built around 1672, is characteristic of the homes of middling inhabitants of colonial Salem. Originally two rooms and an attic, it was enlarged in the mid-1700s by the addition of a gambrel-roofed ell. Here lived fishermen, mariners, shipwrights, and other craftsmen with their families or as boarders.

The Capt. John Hodges House is a classic example of the Georgian style. Its symmetrical facade, fan-lit and pedimented doorway, powerful corner quoins, and dormer windows all derive inspiration from Georgian England, while its roof reminds us how long the gambrel was used in Salem. This house attests to the wealth that ship captains amassed in Salem and the the sophistication that they acquired at the ports-of-call on their ocean voyages.

The North Church, now the First Church of Salem, erected in 1835-36, is a rare example of the Gothic Revival style in this neoclassical city.
