Braga is the capital of Minho region. Recently "the Guardian" referred to Braga as the most charming town in Portugal.

A two thousand years old city, the oldest portuguese town, which was founded by Bracaros, then was established by the Romans in 250 BC and was called "Bracara Augusta", in honor of the emperor Augustus. From here departed five famous roman paths, being Bracara the capital of Galécia, between the northern of Douro and the Cantábrico.

It is known as the "Roman city"; but also as the "baroque city", due the high number of baroque monuments and also, as the "Archbishops city" because for centuries its archbishopric was the most important in Iberian Peninsula, and finally as the "Three sacrum-hills" thanks to three sanctuaries located in a rocky chain.

We are at "Ropemakers' Garden"a complex of buildings, dated the 18th century, arises majestically. Or beside the monumental fountain of the four-winged lions (Porto has 170 fountains! They are really everywhere!).

At the opposite hill, called "Battle Square", we can imagine the bohemian 19th-century Porto. Here was placed the first Opera House and, on the top, St. Ildefonso Church depicts 11000 tiles.

Near the "Calçada da Vandoma" lays the most important of the 4 gates of the old wall. The story goes back to the year 900.

Over there, look at "the Queen Stairs", climbed every day by the mother of our first king to follow the progress of the cathedral construction, that she founded.

Inside it, the marked verticality of the central nave, with its thick, fasciculated pillars, vaults and arches, the gilt altarpiece, the fresco walls, the silver altar.

At "The Whirlpool Alley" stands the city's oldest house.

Two cities with an important role in the construction of the Portuguese identity, as a nation and religion.

We start by visiting the Guimarães Castle, symbol of the cradle of the Portuguese nation followed by the Chapel of S. Miguel and Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, where I will give a fully detailed history background.
