If you are interested in the history of Portugal's recent history, this tour is definitely for you! Did you know Portugal's dictatorship is the longest in Western Europe? Have you heard about Salazar, the Portuguese dictator? At the Aljube Museum, you will learn about this horrific period of our history as well as some of the stories of the brave men and women who resisted the fascist regime. You will get to experience firsthand the so-called "curros" - the isolation cells where prisoners were taken to while waiting for interrogation. Imagine yourself sucking inside a 1x2 meters cell. The tour will end at Carmo Square - the place where the dictatorship came to an end!
We start the tour at Aljube Museum - this will be the perfect place to introduce you to the history of Portugal during the dictatorship and all the events that lead to it. Then, we will take a short walk to Carmo Square - this will be the end of the tour where you will get the change to learn about the April Revolution, also known as Carnation Revolution. Finally, we will walk down to Rossio - the heart of Lisbon's city center. We end the tour here and you will be free to explore the city on tour on.
