Hear about Nobel Laureate Jon Fosse, about his Oslo home Grotten at the Palace Park. See (outside) both national theatres in Oslo, The National Theatre and The Norwegian Theatre, the latter connected to Nobel laureate Jon Fosse. Why do we have two theatres considered national - and two official languages? Hear about the playwright Henrik Ibsen and the last 13 years of his life living in Oslo, learn about his frequent visit to Grand Café where other of the cultural elite met in the late 19th century. All the events in "Hunger", the debut novel of Nobel laureate Knut Hamsun took place in Oslo (called Christiania then, you will hear why). We will see some of the locations. For 400 years Norway was in union with Denmark, learn about some of the authors of whom we quarrel with the Danes whether they are Danish or Norwegian. Hear about feminist Camilla Collett, and about queen Eufemia who had a street named after her in Oslo. The new Main Library is located on this street because she was a literary person.
There are other people and places of interest, and several other sights in the inner city that do not have a specific connection to literature but are worth seeing. In addtion to the subject of literature we will see the older 19th century parts of Oslo including the Royal Palace and main street, Karl Johan Street, and we will visit the modern area including the Opera House. Specific attention will be given to the Nobel Prizes. Why is The Literary Nobel Prize awarded by The Swedish Academy in Stockholm, as well as three of the other other prizes, whilst only the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by Norway? Why do we have this confusion of the five Nobel prizes being divided between the two countries? Optional: Adding an hour to this program we can visit the Ibsen Museum and see the apartment where the playwright lived the last 13 years of his life. This is only possible certain days in the off season. Contact me for admission and tour pricing.

Walking tour.
Oslo, Oslo, Norway
Ideally the tour should start at The Norwegian Nobel Institute, also it is natural as Norway October 2023 had the fourth Nobel Laureate in Literature, Jon Fosse. However, we may start anywhere (cruise port or your hotel) and we will cover all sights and subjects no matter where we start.
