Ralph de Rijke
Hi! I'm Ralph, your bilingual guide (born and raised in the UK, Dutch parents). Welcome to...
Itinerary not perfect? Message Ralph de Rijke to build a tour that’s just right for you.
In the 17th century the Zaansche Schans, a river widening just north of Amsterdam, was the bustling centre of Europe's first industrial revolution. A thousand Dutch windmills sawed planks, crushed dyewoods, ground spices, and pulped rags and rope to make paper pulp. Today the area has beendevoted to conserving dozens of historic buildings - windmills, shops, farms and houses - and making them open to the public all year round. If you have a layover at Schiphol Airport of 4 hours or more, visit the Zaansche Schans and get a real taste of what made Holland so famous!
I will pick you up by car from Schiphol Airport, take you to the Zaansche Schans, and take you back to Schiphol in time for your onward flight. The number of attractions you visit will naturally depend on the amount of time you have available. The Zaansche Schans is easy to cover on foot. Some of the attractions - the windmills, for instance - are not wheelchair-accessible.
