Northwest Namibia is home to the country's flagship nature reserve and most popular tourist destination, Etosha National Park. Etosha means the "great white area" and refers to the huge salt pan. Etosha Pan is the largest salt pan in Africa and is the park's most distinctive and dramatic feature, visible even from space. To the south of the pan there are open grasslands, woodland and permanent waterholes that act as a magnet for game. The landscape is unique and varied and subsequently home to a wide variety of animals.
