We will start our day driving to the fresh water spring of San Crisanto for a 90 min experience into one of the best preserved mangrove forests of Mexico. And there, in the middle of the forest we will take a refreshing swim in one of the many fresh water springs located along the coast of the Yucatan. After our swim we will drive to the beautiful and petit Mayan archeological site of Xcambo making stops along the way to see flamingoes and other birds. Xcambo is a small archeological site that has everything we need to see to understand the sophisticated life of the ancient Mayas. Here we will see religious pyramids, ancient steam baths, sacrificial stones and remains of ancient Mayan palaces among other buildings. After climbing the pyramids and walking around the site we will drive to the ancient but still active salt flats of Xtampu where we will learn about the Mayan tradition of harvesting pink sea salt from the ancient flats, here we will see the different pinkish colors of the salt flats.
Departure from meeting point at an agreed time to go to the small fishing village of San Crisanto where we will take a 1 hour and 30 minute ride into the mangrove forest to see the different types of mangrove trees and swim in the fresh water spring. If we start this tour in Progreso it is a one hour drive on a scenic road (from Merida the drive takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes). After our swim we will drive 30 minutes to the archeological site of Xcambo, we will make a couple of stops along the way to see the different areas where pink flamingoes and other wading birds feed themselves. Once at Xcambo I will show you and explain you all the different buildings we will see in the site and I will present you the ways of life of the ancient Mayans at this site, this walking tour of Xcambo lasts about 1 hour. Before driving back we will stop at an ancient salt flat where modern Mayas are still harvesting salt in the same way and at the same place ancient Mayas did, this stop typically takes us 30 to 40 minutes.
