The Historic Center of Mexico City is an open-air gallery, where art and history come alive in large-scale murals adorning some of the city's most important buildings. This walking tour will take guests to several landmark locations that house iconic murals, each reflecting social and political messages integral to Mexico’s identity. Guests will learn about the history, themes, and techniques that characterize Mexican muralism, especially as pioneered by renowned artists like Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco.
1. Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) Building We’ll begin our journey at the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). This building is open only on weekdays. For a tour on a weekend there will be an alternative). 2. Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso Next, we’ll visit the historic Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, where Mexican muralism truly began. Here, guests will see some of Rivera’s and José Clemente Orozco’s early works. 3. Palacio de Bellas Artes Moving on, we’ll go to the beautiful Palacio de Bellas Artes, a beacon of art and culture in Mexico City. We’ll conclude at the Museo Mural Diego Rivera, which houses Rivera’s iconic *Sueño de una Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central*.
