Ever wondered why Mexican architecture is world famous? Discover it now in this comprehensive two day tour! From the colonial time when Mexico City got its nickname "city of palaces", over the early 20th century art-nouveau and art-déco, to works by renowned architect Luis Barragán (Pritzker and UNESCO awards), the master of light and colour. Some contemporary highlights include mural and pyblic art by Diego Rivera and others, projects by rising stars Enrique Norten or Michael Rojkind, a library or art gallery by Alberto Kalach, and examples of Mexican brutalism. On the second day, I want to show you the lesser known south of the city. The UNESCO world heritage site of the National University UNAM is to me a magical play of modernist buildings, integrated landscape planning and pre columbian materials. Nearby, we can discover colonial gems of San Angel, mid century architecture in the Pedregal lavabeds, and the first building built according to Le Corbusier in 1932.
This 2 day tour can be customized according to your interests (period, style, architect. . . ). Or you can just lay back and let me pick out the best for you! Example Day 1 (7-8h): • Legorreta's Plaza Juarez or Camino Real • Rivera's Tlaloc statue and underwater mural • Barragan's Gilardi house (by appointment) and Condesa • El Eco Gallery by Matthias Goëritz • Chopo or Soumaya Museum • Vasconcelos Library and Casa wabi or Kurimanzutto gallery by Alberto Kalach • Fenix fire station Day 2 (7-8h): • the mystic Barragan nunnery&chapel/Pedregal House/Max Cetto house (by appointment) • UNAM University campus • Diego Rivera studio twin house • Teodoro Gonzalez de León, Pedro Ramirez Vasquez, Felix Candela, Enrique de la Mora, Michel Rojkind. . Bigger groups and exclusive private visits can be organized (Tatiana Bilbao studio, mid-century Pedregal houses, Senosain Quetzalcoatl projects..), at an additional cost. Modern architecture tours to other cities and regions (day excursions or longer roundtrips) on request.
