Tonalá is the city where the Spanish colonizers made their first stop to attempt the foundation of Guadalajara, but they found it much more challenging than they thought, since they had to go on a big fight with an agressive indigenous group wich made them reconsider. They actually lost the battle against the fearless Tonaltecas (tastoanes warriors). Tonalá is now mainly known for its artisan house-factories that keep the magic and the traditions alive, generation to generation. On Thursdays and Sundays the local artisans put their art on display, to show and sell on a big artisan market where you can find clayart, furniture, souvenirs, decorations, traditional clothes, accesories and even traditional foods, candies and beverages along the way. Come with me to know what the artisans do with their own hands, embracing the creativity and culture that you can atest to in the market. During our walking through the market, I'll give you tips on what or where to eat if you so desire!
-Our tour would generally start at the monument of the Sun at the entrance of Tonalá, which is known as "the city where the sun comes out". Here I will tell you a bit of the city's history. -We'll begin our tour strolling by the Guardians of the Queen pedestrian walk, appreciating the striking art it presents. -After this, we'll visit the 1st Chapel in Tonalá, establlished by the Spanish. -Next, I'll accompany you into the artisan market to explore the local creations. -Then, we'll visit House-Factories of local families who create traditional handicrafts. --Finally I'll take you to visit a little old house with a little show room in the entrance so you can appreciate how the indigenous people lived before the Spanish arrived. -After this, I'll walk you back to the first point of our tour, to say our goodbyes. This itinerary can be customized to best meet your specific interests.
