Malta played a pivotal role in the Second World War Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. Located between North Africa and Europe, it was the Allies' only outpost in the Central Mediterranean and proved to be 'A Thorn in the Axis Side'. It withstood over three years of aerial bombardment and suffered hunger, damage and death. Thankfully, these times are only a distant memory. But they are visible in museums and if you look closely enough, the scars can be seen on buildings till today.
Mdina for its commanding view over much of the island. Ta' Qali - the Aviation Museum situated at the former RAF base. Birgu underground air raid shelter of The Malta at War Museum. Valletta's revamped National War Museum within the 1566 Fort St Elmo. There will be time for lunch and a few moments in contemporary Valletta.

An air conditioned compact insured car (or minibus over 3 persons at a supplement). Moderate walking and also steps. WARNING: If you suffer from claustrophobia, you may stay upstairs in the Malta at War Museum, however, should we visit Valletta's War Rooms, these are entirely underground and not suitable.
