A walking tour with a difference to discover not only the city centre but also the back streets of Valletta. Valletta attributes its charm to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. The challenge for these gentlemen was to bring Rome to Malta and as a result they built Valletta. The city was once known as the city where the streets 'bear no name'. Today the streets and buildings still take you way back in time, yet the vibrant present atmosphere echoes through the streets. Valletta is the city of splendid medieval and contemporary architecture. The magnificent palaces, the auberges and over 20 churches adorned with Baroque decorations are surrounded by public spaces such as squares and gardens. Today shops, coffee shops and restaurants are all over the city but together we will visit a family owned traditional coffee shop hidden away off the beaten-track.
Itinerary 09.00 hrs : Meeting point at The Triton Fountain in front of Valletta's main gate. Other meeting point suggestions to be discussed. -We visit the Upper Barrakka Garden with the Grand harbour views and the Saluting Battery. -The visit to St. John's co-Cathedral and the museum of Caravaggio is optional. -We walk around the city centre and the back streets passing by numerous palaces, auberges and squares. -A stop for a coffee break. We shall visit a traditional Maltese coffee shop hidden away from the busy city centre. A family owned business where freshly brewed spiced coffee is served with home-made baked Imqaret. This sweet is made with pastry filled with a mixture of dates and flavoured with citrus zest, aniseed, or cinnamon. After the tour you may have lunch or go shopping or you may visit one of the many museums, in particular the Grandmaster's Palace, the Sacra Infermeria or the museum of Archeology.
