At the end of the 17 century, the British discovered significant deposits of valuable tin ore here, up until the 1940s, Bentong’s economy was primarily driven by tin mining, and the rubber industry. An important event transformed the town after WWII : the Communist Insurgency, where a state of emergency was declared in 1948, the Chinese residents were forcibly relocated to designated areas known as ‘new villages’ to cut off potential expansion of communist influence. Today Bentong still has 15 ‘new villages’ , providing travelers the perfect platform to experience this unique way of life.
