Have you ever wondered what life was like under Soviet rule? And how people feel about those times today? If so, this tour is perfect for you! During the tour, I’ll share stories from my family and friends about life in the Soviet era while exploring Soviet monuments, buildings, and memorials. At times, the tour will take a darker turn; at others, it will be lighthearted and even humorous. You'll get to see different sides of Latvian life in the USSR, gaining insight into how it still influences politics in Latvia today and how people view this period from different perspectives.
On the Soviet tour, we’ll visit sites such as the Red Riflemen Square, Soviet-era buildings from different decades, and rare surviving Soviet monuments that spark heated debates today. We’ll also explore churches, the infamous Hotel Inturist—once a surveilled and bugged hotel for foreign tourists—the KGB Museum, and a Stalin-era skyscraper. Additionally, we'll see the memorials dedicated to those exiled to Siberia, the Freedom Monument and how it survived Soviet times, and memorial stones telling stories of 1991 barricades.
