Take this tour to the Takwa ruins to discover the remains of 15th and 16th Century Swahili trading town. It was abandoned in the 17th Century due to salinisation of the water and fighting between the Takwa and Pate people. They ruins were named National monument in 1982. We will reach the area by boat and have a nice walk to see the ruins.
The tour is organised by speed boat or by a Dhow (traditionally boat) depending on the tides level. We begin from Lamu island just after sunrise (at around 9 am). Once the boat is off the shore, fishing can be done to engage everyone during the quiet journey leading to Manda tunnel. The tunnel is decorated by a beautiful thick creaky mangroves vegetation unwound itself in the middle of nowhere. As you get off the boat by mid morning sunrise, it will be about 5 minutes walk along the wooden walkway above the mangroves vegetation. Then, there is another section of a slightly raised 'bridge' above a water logged area made of slender mangroves woods. The Takwa ruins tour begins by viewing a geographical map of the site at the main entrance. The visitors will be taken around the ruins, as the guide explains the amazing history behind the once Swahili old town. After the tour, we will go back to the starting point.

On foot from the hotels to the waiting boat on the shore. This takes less than 5 minutes since most hotels are just by the shores. Boat ride.
