Shiga is a neighboring prefecture of Kyoto and easily accessible from Kyoto/Osaka. As a strategic point linking the east and west of Japan since ancient times, Shiga is the important transportation hub where the two major old highways, Tokaido and Nakasendo connecting Kyoto and Edo (Current Tokyo), confluence. During this tour, we’ll visit old post town Kusatsu, where ‘Honjin‘, an exclusive accommodation for feudal lords and shogunate officials, is still preserved. After learning about travel in those days at a museum, we’ll walk along a part of historical roadways, then visit either Ohmi merchant town or Hikone castle town. About Ohmi merchants - Ohmi merchants originate from today's Shiga, active from the middle ages. They are known for various innovations and philosophy of integrity, still alive in Japanese business culture. About Hikone - Hikone Castle is one of the only five remaining National Treasure castles in Japan, built some 400 years ago. A well-planned castle town is also preserved there.
The itinerary can be customized according to your preference and interest. Sample Itinerary 1) visit ‘Honjin’ and a museum in the historic post town Kusatsu -> move to Nakasendo trail near Echigawa post town by train & bus/taxi and walk along a part of the trail -> explore picturesque Ohmi merchant town Gokasho and visit preserved old merchant houses Sample Itinerary 2) visit ‘Honjin’ and a museum in the historic post town Kusatsu -> move to Hikone trail known as a road for the shogunate near Hikone castle by train & taxi and walk along a part of the trail -> explore Hikone castle and castle town, which is one of the best preserved Samurai castles in Japan In addition to the above, a full-day Nakasendo Magome-Tsumago walking tour from/to Kyoto can also be arranged, on the condition of additional transportation costs, including those for your guide. Note: This tour is not held on Mondays because the museum and Honjin are closed on Mondays.
