Pompeii - The inside of a private residence in Pompeii. This room was called Atrium. The square basin you see on the floor was thought to collect rain water entering from a same shape roof windows. Water then, was channeled to an underground larger cistern. What looks like a broken marble column in the middle of the floor was a well used for drawing up the water from the below cistern.
