Verona is a cozy and modern town based on ancient roots that come from the Romans, 2000 years ago. The evidence is due to the fact that all along the old center we can admire a variety of churches, buildings, walls and even roads that have a roman or older origin. Outside the center, where most of the tourists don't go, we have the chance to see a lot of other traces of our heritage. The noisy groups ignore that just outside the town, we have such a peaceful situation in which we can move with no rush and in a totally peaceful and different atmosphere. With this tour, we will find out a place that is completely off of the beaten routes. A small church on a hill, that still today preserves its original fascinating atmosphere and that still today is worshipped by residents. The tour is intended to be taken by bicycle. You can choose a short walk also, but in this case, a drive of about 10 min is needed.
I can pick you up at your accommodation if this is inside the walls. We bike to Avesa, a less populated part of the town, totally dipped in green bushes, wine yards, and gentle hills in which, in addition, some finds of Homo di Neandertal, who lived in the area longer than 40 000 years ago,l have been found in the '50s. From Avesa, after a short visit to the core of this ancient and still genuine village, we head up to Quinzano along an easy and smooth cycle path. Once in Quinzano, we reach the San Rocco church, and then the center of the village, where we can drop off the bicycles. After a 10-minute walk, along a gravel uphill path, we reach our destination, the eremo. The Eremo di San Rocchetto is surrounded by olive trees and an ancient wall, made with cobblestone picked from the river Adige. The walls of the church are painted with sacred figures and the whole structure is a masterpiece. On the way back from the eremo, we stop for a glass of wine in an antica locanda in Quinzano. Just like locals!
