Carlo Scarpa completed only a few works in his city and even fewer can be visited (the others are private residences). Nevertheless, more than 40 years after his untimely death in Japan, the spaces he designed are unique and memorable. Let's take a look together! In 2009, the Japanese maestro Tadao Ando paid a tribute to Scarpa in his remodelling of the former Customs House. I visit these places regularly and always find new details or new perspectives: I feel like the places are talking to us although they were completed decades ago. Japan is very present in the Punta della Dogana Museum because the Japanese architect Tadao Ando worked on it by making it one of his creations without overlooking Venice's genius loci. Moving from the buzz of Piazza San Marco to the quietness of the Olivetti Showroom is like entering a different world and I can say the same for the whole ground floor of Ca' Querini Stampalia that includes the one-of-a-kind garden, a magic blend of Japan and Venice!
- We'll meet in a designated place in the city centre of your choice. - We'll visit the Olivetti Showroom in Piazza San Marco, inaugurated in November 1958 which still today shows the mastery of the Professore (as Carlo Scarpa was called) in treating traditional materials and techniques in new breathtaking ways. - Then, we'll walk for about 10 minutes to Ca' Querini Stampalia and see the ground floor completely remodelled by Scarpa in the early 1960s with the creation of a wonderful garden. - With the same ticket, you may continue by yourselves the visit to the museum on the 2nd and 3rd floors. - After lunch, we'll walk to the Punta della Dogana Museum, next to the Basilica della Salute, to admire the work by Tadao Ando for the French art collector François Pinault (alternatively, by taxi or gondola).
