Piran is one of the most photogenic cities in Slovenia and has preserved its charm to these days. Rich history, closeness to the sea and production of salt made its architecture and unique way of living. In Piran, you will feel as you have stepped right into another time. You will be charmed by the narrow cobbled streets and admire the old town walls. Its main square is named after Giuseppe Tartini, composer and violinist born in a house on the square. In the pier, you can catch sight of fisherman unravelling fishing nets. Just having coffee, lunch or dinner surrounded by sounds of the sea and stories from past, is an unforgettable experience! Will continue through Portorož to Sečovlje salt pans, where salt is still produced in the traditional way, based on a 700-year-old method that harmonizes man and nature. Over the centuries, a unique habitat has formed for plants, animals and migrating birds. The cultural heritage, which reflects centuries of work by salt makers, is extremely rich.
-The ride to Piran should take us 30 min. We'll pass Trieste, Koper and Izola, Slovenian costal towns. -We'll have to park outside Piran, because in summer Piran tries to be car free. We'll take a free bus shuttle to Tartini square. -We'll see the old port of Piran where fisherman activities and life is still vibrant and loud. -On Tartini square there are several important buildings: Town Hall, Court House, Tatini statue and his house, Venitian house, St. Peter church, etc. -We'll continue to Vegetable square to the Square 1st. of May, once cities main square and the oldest part of Piran. -Then to the sea to Punta peninsula up to the St. George cathedral on the hill (this is optional - the way to the cathedral is quite challenging! If its too much for you, we'll take a walk to Jewish ghetto and the Minorite monastery). -We'll finish with a glass of local wine in a cafe used only by locals. -Then to the border with Croatia, where 700 years old salina and methods of producing still live on.
