Perched atop Mount Barbaro, Segesta was home to the Elymians, a mysterious Bronze-Age tribe supposedly descended from the Trojans. The Greeks, Romans, Normans and Arabs all left their mark here, making it one of the richest archeological sites in Sicily, if not all of Italy. Let a local guide peel back layers of history and bring the site to life on a Segesta private tour. Segesta is accessible from the coastal ports, so meet your guide dockside with a private car. Sit on the steps of the Greek theatre and let your guide provide a historical primer, then visit the 2500-year-old Doric temple with its still-standing columns. The city was sacked by the Vandals, but it's strategic location was not forgotten. By the 12th century, an imposing castle and church had risen from the rubble, along with an Islamic burial chamber and mosque. If you have time, ask your guide to ride the cable car to Eyrice. Set on a bluff overlooking the sea, the crumbling castles and churches make great photos.
