Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore - The Opera Duomo Museum

The grandiose Piazza del Duomo square with the third largest cathedral in Europe, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296, that is 153 meters (502 ft) long. Also in the square, the Baptistry is the oldest monument in Florence and its East facing doors, the Gates of Paradise, were admired by Michelangelo who gave them their name. The original reliefs and the statues of the Giotto bell-tower can be viewed at eye level and the treasures of the Cathedral and of the Baptistry (including its original doors) can be found inside Florence's Duomo Museum. Not to be missed are Donatello's statues and the famous Pietà that Michelangelo carved for his own tomb. My favorite piece: a silver altar, it took some 100 years to create and once was used inside the Baptistry.
