Catania is a city of contrasts, sparking diverse opinions among its visitors. I won't claim it's beautiful – that's a matter of taste. However, there's no denying its fascinating history and rich tapestry of monuments from various eras. Catania has a resilient spirit, with its inhabitants rebuilding after numerous earthquakes, Etna eruptions, and wars. Join me on a walking tour to explore Catania’s greatest attractions and uncover its hidden gems. We’ll visit not only the famous sites but also lesser-known spots that capture the true Mediterranean vibe. Along the way, I’ll share stories about the city's history, architecture, legends, and daily life, offering a deep and authentic glimpse into the heart of Catania.
We'll begin our tour in the heart of Catania at Piazza del Duomo, showcasing the stunning late Sicilian Baroque style. Here, we'll visit the Cathedral of St. Agatha, the city's patron saint. Next, we'll explore the famous Pescheria di Catania (not available on Sundays), the bustling fish market. We’ll then walk along Via Etnea, passing through University Square and Stesicoro Square, where we'll see the ruins of the Roman amphitheater, a key monument from Catania's Roman era. Our journey continues along Via Crociferi, renowned for its beautiful Baroque churches. We'll reach the UNESCO heritage site of the former Benedictine monastery and the monumental Church of St. Nicholas, featuring a terrace with panoramic views of the city. We'll also pass the Roman baths, Greek theater, and Castello Ursino, a majestic medieval castle, and discover some hidden corners of Catania, each offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history and architecture.
