If you think the Amalfi Coast is all about beaches, picturesque villages and cliffs. . . well, you know just half the story! Get ready to discover a whole new "face" of Amalfi: lush vegetation, a river that crosses a vertical valley, a natural protected area with a concentration of dozens of little waterfalls and springs coming out of the rocks. And then walking next to the ruins of what centuries ago used to be the industrial heart of the coast: the ancient paper production district. Amalfi was lucky enough to exchange merchandise and absorb ideas from the Arab world. One if the best ones was the production of paper. When hiking, I will tell you the detailed story how the paper was made inside the old factories. This is hands down my favourite hike of the coast: It's the temple where I often go, I stop and just meditate next to one of the rivers. And where I flee during the summer, to get away from the heat. Get ready to walk, to explore the reserve, and to enjoy an amazing lunch below the lemon trees.
Usually the itinerary starts in the village of Pontone (Scala), goes to the valley and then finishes downtown Amalfi. But due to a big landslide we had last year, until further notice, the itinerary will be as follows: - We will start the hike in the medieval hamlet of Pontone, and from there we will walk through alleyways and lemon groves; - Once in the heart of the valley, we will walk up to the natural reserve, where we will admire unique waterfalls and a vegetation that will remind you of the rainforest, and where a rare specie of fern still survives since Prehistory; - We will visit the ruins of an ancient ironworks, and then we will make our way back to Pontone, admiring from above the ruins of the paper mills; - Possibility to stop at a farm-to-table restaurant in Pontone, with a breathtaking view over Amalfi; - We will walk down to Amalfi, where eventually we will visit the Paper Museum; The hiking tour will finish in Amalfi, where you will explore with me some hidden alleyways of the center.
