The Hurva synagogue was built about 1721 by followers of Reb Yehuda HeHasid who died 3 days after arriving in Jerusalem with up to 1000 followers. The synagogue was destroyed by Arabs shortly after and finally rebuilt in 1864. It was the main Ashkenazi synagogue of the Old City and stood as a landmark for almost 100 years until it was blown up by the Jordanian Legion in the fighting for the Jewish quarter in 1948. After the Six Day war when Israel recaptured the Old City there were discussions about rebuilding the synagogue. World-class Jewish American architect Louis Kahn was invited to Israel. This tour follows in Kahn's footsteps as he explored the historical geography of the area and submitted plans for a new Hurva synagogue. But before anything was built Kahn died of a heart attack in New York City's Penn station. In addition we'll visit two other synagogues built around the same time with fascinating stories, Tiferet Israel and Ohel Yitzchak.
Hurva synagogue Tiferet Israel synagogue Ohel Yitzhak synagogue If you're interested in extending the tour it's also possible to visit 13th century Ramban synagogue 4 Sephardic synagogues. I can also arrange the Western Wall Tunnel tour.
