Ireland has bloody and violent history. The bloodshed ended in the Irish Republic with the signing of the 'treaty' with the British in 1922, at the end of a particularly bloody and brutal guerilla war against the forces of the British crown. There was further bloodshed in the civil war that followed the signing of the treaty, but peace was established in 1923. The struggle continued in the northern part of the island up to the signing of the Good Friday agreement and the beginning of the peace process in 1999. Unfortunately and often completely without any logic or reason, the opposing sides in the struggle between the Irish and the British defined the conflict along sectarian lines - Catholic against Protestant. This is far too simple a generalisation, so on this tour I will expand on this subject - with reference to the many historical events that define the Irish struggle against British rule in Ireland.
