Blackrock is my home. Not many tourists have it on their 'must see' list but it is full of history and mystery. It started out as a small fishing village, was developed mainly in the 19th century and is now a busy suburb. A 20 minute train ride from Dublin city centre takes you to Blackrock Dart station along the southern shore of Dublin Bay. Our walk will take you to Blackrock Park, the village itself, past fine 18th century summer houses, a 9th century cross and some interesting sculptures. You'll hear about ancient roads, highway robberies, shipwrecks, assassinations, a scalped priest and tales of adultery. You'll learn about Blackrock's famous residents including James Joyce whose house we'll see.
This tour covers Blackrock, a suburb 8 kilometres south of Dublin city. We'll start at the Dart station and visit: Blackrock Baths Blackrock Park Martello Tower The Dolmen (sculpture) Blackrock House St John the Baptist Church (subject to Covid restrictions) Blackrock Village The tour will end at the Dart station. You might like to spend more time in the village and try one of the many restaurants, cafes or pubs.
