Capital of the Indian state of Kerala, the city of Thiruvananthapuram isn't an easy place to spell. Thankfully, this city is still known by its colonial version, Trivandrum, meaning visitors won't have to blow their budget buying extra vowels. Take a Trivandrum private tour and explore the place Gandhi called 'the Evergreen City' with a local guide. Trivandrum is packed with temples, the most famous of which is Sree Padmanabhaswamy, dedicated to Lord Vishu. Ask your guide to walk the route of the Aarat festival, when statues of deities are dunked in the ocean before being paraded through the streets to the temple. Stop in at Kowidar Palace. Built in 1915, its now home to the Travancore royal family. Lose yourself in the 150 richly-decorated rooms, but be sure to emerge in time for an afternoon trip to Shankumugham beach. When evening falls and dinner calls, head to the area around the railway station and ask your guide to seek out coconut curries spiced to perfection
