The former capital city of Goa today called Velha Goa/Old Goa (formerly Cidade de Goa) and dubbed Rome of the East and Lisboa of the East during the heights of her glory is today a simple religious centre for Roman Catholicism and the only area in the entire state of Goa designated by UNESCO as a 'World Heritage Site'. Starting from the Viceroy's Arc; I decode mysteries of the city and its architecture from the Goan style Gateway of India helping my visitors identify the 1st man who discovered the sea route to India from Europe to the significance of St. Catherine of Alexandria in the city and the fallout from the bubonic plague that ravaged the city during the mid-18th century. I still can't imagine this city having a population of 2, 00, 000 once upon a time to today being just over 25000 inhabitants today. Of the many things still left to see are the ruins & standing architecture that over a glimpse of the past in what was a thriving port town.
We stop at the Church of St. Cajetan where more mysteries of its origin, the internal architecture, underground crypt and connection to re-establish ties between India and Portugal is shared. - Next we visit India's largest Roman Catholic church where more mysteries of its origins and architecture is discovered. - From there to the non- active church of St. Francis of Assisi, the only church with Fresco art work throughout its walls. - The 1st 'ever' Roman Catholic structure constructed by the Portuguese in Goa; - the chapel of St. Catherine of Alexandria is our next stop before moving to the only Basilica in India, - The Basilica of Bom Jesus which houses the relics of St. Francis Xavier. - Next we travel up to a hill called the Monte Santo where we visit 'The Ruins of the Church of St. Augustine' where I decode the probable reasons for the collapse of that massive structure from 1843 onwards.
