A trip to Goðafoss and Mývatn is one of Akureyri’s most popular shore excursions. This is for good reason, as this day tour encompasses some of the most stunning places in North Iceland. Goðafoss is both one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls and one of its most historically significant sites. On our way there, I'll talk about ancient gods, the rise of Christianity in Iceland and the Icelandic parliament of Alþingi, handed down to us from the pagan vikings. Lake Mývatn is situated in a volcanically active part of Iceland. During the last few thousand years, the water in this lake has interacted with hot lava during many of the area’s frequent eruptions. When water & lava meet, it results in one of nature’s most explosive interactions and leaves behind some of its strangest landscapes. This is what we come to see. We'll get a perfect mix of nature & culture. Every stop is simultaneously geologically fascinating, steeped in folklore and stunningly beautiful. It’s a day you won’t forget soon.
-We'll start with a scenic 45 min drive from Akureyri, where you'll learn of history & enjoy gorgeous fjord views. -Next, we'll take some time to take in the thundering Goðafoss, the waterfall of the gods. -From Goðafoss, we'll do a 35 min drive to the lake Mývatn area. -Said lake will serve as a beautiful backdrop as we make our way around its southern side, stopping every 10-15 mins to explore the numerous geological sites in the area, which include: ·The Skútustaðagígar cluster of pseudocraters, offering lake views. ·The enchanting lava field of Dimmuborgir, the home of the yule lads. ·The cave and Game of Thrones shooting location, Grjótagjá. ·The geothermal area of Hverir, where we see boiling mud-pots and fumaroles. -We conclude the tour with a an hour & 15 min drive back to Akureyri. The itinerary is flexible. Weather & time permitting, optional stops include: A hike to the rim of the volcanic crater Hverfjall, a relaxing soak in the Mývatn Nature Baths & lunch at a local restaurant.

I will greet you at the harbour as you come off the ship, standing by the walkway towards downtown. If you wish to arrange another meeting place than the cruise terminal, that is no problem either.
