On this winter tour to Goðafoss and Mývatn, you'll see some of North Iceland's most scenic & sought after places, free from the summer crowds & likely beautifully cloaked in snow & ice. Along the way I'll tell you all you need to know about the geology, history & folklore of the area from a locals perspective. For those ready to brave the cold, this winter adventure in the north is a very rewarding experience. I'll be taking you to Goðafoss waterfall, which is situated in a frigid glacial river. Tremendously powerful & steeped in history and folklore, this is the perfect start to this adventure. We'll also visit the frozen lake of Mývatn, where we’ll explore other-worldly geological formations, learn the Christmas folklore & warm up in a geothermal bath. Situated in a volcanic hot spot at the edge of the northern highlands, Lake Mývatn is a place of extremes. Boiling steam & mud rise from the ground, surrounded by ice & snow. Here it'll become evident why Iceland is so often called the land of fire & ice.
-We'll start by heading east from Akureyri through a geothermically heated underground tunnel. Inside, we'll stop to feel the warmth and learn about this feat of engineering. -We'll then stop to admire the thundering Goðafoss, the waterfall of gods, before moving on to the beautiful Lake Mývatn. -As we drive around the lake, we will explore the area’s geological sites. -Afterwards, we'll take a walk in the forest of Höfði to admire its strange lava pillars. -We'll later look for the home of the yule lads in the enchanting lava field of Dimmuborgir. -Next, we'll see boiling mud-pots in the geothermal area of Hverir -Before heading back to Akureyri, we'll warm up after a cold day of exploring with a relaxing soak in the Mývatn nature baths. This itinerary is flexible (and weather may alter it). Optional stops include visiting Akureyri's Christmas House, or take a detour to have dinner at the remote highland farm of Möðrudalur á fjöllum.
