A very beautiful and picturesque settlement, Nafplio is located in the southwest side of the Peloponnese and is famous for being the first capital of Modern Greece. The city has actually a very long recorded history, since it's first mentioned in a funerary inscription of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III of Egypt, almost 3300 years ago. Nowadays, it's a popular tourist destination, famous for its narrow alleys and its Venetian castle, called Palamidi that dominates its skyline. It's also associated to some of the darkest moments of Modern Greek history. It was here that the first governor of modern Greece, John Kapodistrias, was assassinated and it was also here where Theodoros Kolokotronis, the leader of the Greeks during the Greek war of independence, was incarcerated. It was the first capital of the country and it's associated to some of the darkest moments in modern Greek history, including the assassination of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first head of state of independent Greece. In the area we now find Nafplio, a settlement existed for thousands of years, as early as the 2nd millenium b. c. During its long history the city has been ruled by many different people, including the Venetians, the Ottomans and the Romans, who have all left their traces in its urban landscape and culture. The modern city of Nafplio is a very popular tourist destination, with its traditional narrow streets and monuments, attracting millions of tourists every year.
