Mystras' historical importance is tremendous. In my primary school, every time we had a history lesson about Byzantium, the teachers organised a school trip to the neighbouring Mystras castle town, an hour's drive from the city where I grew up (Kalamata). During the excursion, as I was running along the stone paths, hiding in the ruins of Byzantine houses or following "The Hunt for the Lost Treasure" organized by one of my teachers, I imagined ladies in long dresses and triangular hats with veils walking alongside me. I imagined knights with Byzantine weapons and swords standing on the battlements next to my classmates, smiling condescendingly. I've been giving this tour since 2014, and each time I feel like I'm traveling back in time. Follow me on an adventure to Mystras, to feel like the knights and damsels of our childhood. This trip is ideal for travelers coming by cruise ships for few hours.
Our journey will start at your hotel / cruise ship port and in less than two hours we will have reached our destination, the castle town of Mystras. Our first stop for photos will be in Keadas. We will be witnesses of the cliff at which Ancient Spartans were bringing and throwing their newborn sick children. We'll let you in the upper gate, along with a brochure for each attraction separately. The route that you will follow is only downhill since we will wait for you at the exit of the lower gate. You will be wandering around Acropolis of William, which dominates the top of castle town. In narrow streets at which once walked princesses and Byzantine emperors. In museums within the cluttered walls, full with elements of daily life. In monasteries where nuns are still living. In churches where emperors were enthroned. Join me and feel like the princess or the knight of your childhood fairy tales!
