Overview of your Kalamata tour:

Messenia is one of the oldest regions in Greece. In this tour you will see some of the greatest monuments of the region that attest to its glory. These include the palace of Nestor, the seat of the wise king Nestor, one of the most venerated figures of the Greek mythology. We will also visit the Venetian castle of Modon, one of the largest and most impressive in the Peloponnese. And of course Niokastro, the castle of Pylos, that overlooks the bay of Navarino, home to one of the most famous battles of modern history, the one that led to the liberation of Greece. As a professional historian and a tour guide, born and raised in the region, I can help you travel to the glorious past of this beautiful corner of Southern Greece. Come with me and let's time travel together to the last 4000 years of Greek history! Mycenaean hoplites, medieval knights and Ottoman Sipahi are waiting for you!

Your Kalamata tour itinerary

We drive from Kalamata to the Palace of Nestor. It has many different areas, including the famous throne room and the historical archive, where hundreds of Linear B tablets have been discovered. We also notice the queen's room and the only preserved bath house of the Greek Bronze Age. After the palace we are heading to the castle of Modon. We enter through a narrow bridge and we climb a tall bastion that offers as a fantastic view of the castle and the sea. Afterwards we pay a visit to the church of Transformation. The tour also includes Bourtzi, the most famous monument of the castle, a magnificent tower that's surrounded by the sea, constructed by the Venetians 500 years ago. From Methoni we travel to Pylos, where we stop for a lunch at a local tavern with traditional Greek fish food. After the lunch we visit Niokastro, the Ottoman castle of Pylos. We climb the citadel in order to take some great photos and we pay a visit the two museums inside. We return to Kalamata and the tour ends.
