"It is impossible to free oneself from the past if one refuses to release the past itself, giving it back to the future", Christian Zervos, L'art de la Crete neolithique e minoenne, 1956. The National Archeological Museum is the oldest in Greece. It was inaugurated in 1867 and houses different Greek artifacts (about 11. 000 exhibits) that were brought to light during different excavations all over Greece. It is therefore the cradle of ancient Greek Art, a necessary and illuminating visit for anyone who wants to get cognizance and to deepen his knowledge of the evolution of Greek Art from the prehistoric period to the Roman times. The navigation of the museum is in chronological order providing the visitor a great retrospective experience of the sculptural and pottery production through the ages.
On our tour, we will have the chance to admire great works of Art such as: the Mask of Agamemnon the Sounion Kouros The Frasikleia Kore The Zeus or Poseidon of Artemision the Diadoumenos of Polykleitos the Ephebes of Antikythira the Jockey of Artemision. But apart from understanding the evolution of Greek Art, we will also try to discover the influence of antiquity on various aspects of modern and contemporary art. We will try to see what a Cycladic idol and a statue of Giacometti or a modern sculpture of Brancusi have in common. How an ancient funerary stelae influenced modern Greek art (Moralis and Tsarouchis) and how the great classical art was rediscovered in the courtyard of the Lorenzo Medici in Florence leading to masterpieces like David of Michelangelo and later to the Neoclassical style of the 19th century Antonio Canova.
