A French author wrote that worlds' history starts with the awakening of the Greek spirit. Athens is one of the places - definitely the most famous - where that awakening took place. So, the visit to Athens is a visit to where some of the foundations of the modern civilization have been set. Once you arrive for the first time, there is one thing that comes to your mind: a visit to the Acropolis, the landmark of Athens, if not of the entire country for many. Therefore you will start with the Essential visit to its archaeological site, where I have worked as an archaeologist and there is an exciting story to share. So as to complete your understanding of its monuments, a visit to the Acropolis Museum is also Essential. Finally, in order to realize how the Greek civilization culminated in the Acropolis, it is . . . Essential to observe its evolution in the galleries of the National Archaeological Museum, one of the best in the world regarding ancient Greek art and culture, where I have worked as an assistant.
• We start the day with the Acropolis, where we admire and learn about the Parthenon, Propylaea, Erechtheion and Temple of Nike. We also enjoy a panoramic view to the city, a view to the birthplace of theatre and demoracy! • After a short and interesting walk through the south slope of the Acropolis or through the modern paved street, we reach the New Acropolis Museum, where we relax in the beautiful, airconditioned galleries and admire the sculptures that originally decorated the temples up on the Rock. • Afterwards, time permitting, we can have a short lunch break at one of the many restaurants that are next to the museum. • After an interesting walk through the picturesque neighbourhood of Plaka and part of the modern city (or - if you prefer - after a short drive by a taxi), we conclude this tour by understanding the evolution of the Greek spirit through the collections of the National Archaeological Museum, which cover a period from the prehistoric to the late Roman times.

This is mainly a walking tour. The only transportation that may be needed is for the National Archaeological Museum. There are various ways to get there: a) an almost fourty minutes walk through the city and the traditional neighbourhood of Plaka, b) subway to Omonoia square and then a ten minutes walk through a modern part of the city, c) fifteen minutes with a taxi (for more than two guests, we'll have to use more than one taxis). Whichever you choose, you will get a nice perception of the city.
