Munich's reputation for its architectural heritage is well known. That is not surprising as the city was founded in the late Middle Ages and can display monuments through all important architectural periods.

This light and easy stroll through Munich will take us past stunning facades, hidden courtyards, plenty of churches, fantastic squares, and iconic monuments. By taking a closer look at the individual structures we will deep-dive into Bavarian history.

Unfortunately, Munich was hit by major destruction during World War II. But thanks to the local population's desire to rebuild their hometown, the cityscape today still reflects the charm and variety of former centuries. That's maybe the reason why Munich is not as famous for state-of-the-art modern architecture as other European cities. But you just need to know where to take a closer look and you will find spectacular contemporary treasures - sometimes right next to some of the oldest buildings in town.

Munich is over 860 years old, this great city, which according to many lifestyle magazines is one of the most liveable cities in the world.
Founded in the Middle Ages, Munich became a major city in the 19th century, it was destroyed and rebuilt.

In this respect, the history of Munich is similar to that of many other cities, but with one decisive difference: Munich was to be rebuilt at all costs at the request of the population. Thus, after decades of reconstruction, an extremely attractive cityscape emerged that optimally combines tradition with moderate modernity. Even today, for example, no buildings are allowed to stand taller than the twin towers of the Frauenkirche, the city's official landmark.

Does that sound old-fashioned? Come with me on a tour of downtown Munich and be impressed by the architecture of a cosmopolitan city that has nevertheless managed to retain its unique cosiness.

An idea as simple as can be: five former courtyards, some of which are centuries old in origin, are combined to form a spectacular shopping center: The "CityQuartier Fünf Höfe". In a fabulous combination, elegance and art in public space are brought into harmony with each other and make shopping an unforgettable experience

A touch of the Middle Ages in Munich's old town: the buildings of the former "Zeughaus" (armory) and the municipal "Marstall" (stables) - today the Munich City Museum

Magnificent architecture and "a second chance for Munich" after the destruction of the synagogues in 1938: With the completion of the Ohel-Jakob Synagogue in 2006, the Jewish fellow citizens return to the heart of the city of Munich with a spectacular new building. The lower part of the building is reminiscent of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, while the glass roof is intended to resemble a tent. Exciting and at the same time forward-looking architecture

A Bavarian lion at the base of a monument to His Majesty King Maximilian I Joseph. The 112-year monarchy left its architectural traces throughout the city. Magnificent buildings, boulevards, stately homes, monuments and parks were built during this period. Also in this time, the residence in the background of the picture is expanded to one of the largest palaces ever.

One of Munich's largest Renaissance complexes ever, the "Alte Akademie" (Old Academy) and the huge Michaelkirche (burial place of His Majesty King Ludwig II) are cleverly mirrored by the modern "Joseph-Pschorr-Haus" built in 2013. An extremely ambitious new building, which surprises with a green atrium over several floors when shopping

English Tudor Gothic in Munich? The building of the Government of Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria) stands in Maximilianstrasse, which is probably the most exclusive of all planned royal boulevards. The building was created at the request of His Majesty Maximlian II in the style of Neo-Gothic, which the king was extremely fond of and regarded as the historical architectural style of the Germans.

Probably the most famous "beer palace" in the world: the Hofbräuhaus, built toward the end of the 19th century, designed in neo-Renaissance style. The large, freestanding building underlines the importance of breweries for Munich. By the way, the distinctive gable can also be found several times on franchises in the United States. Probably the best known is the Hofbräuhaus in Las Vegas.

Und noch einmal: Bayerischer Stolz und Stärke - ausgedrückt durch das Bayerische Wappentier, dem Löwen. Im Bildhintergrund die beeindruckende Theatinerkirche, die als Münchens erste Barockkirche im 17. Jahrhundert entstanden ist. Der Barock kam über Italien hier nach München und auch die Theatinerkirche fand ihr Vorbild in der Kirche Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rom

Herrenchiemsee Palace - Day Trip from Munich

Herrenchiemsee, located in the stunning "Chiemgau" region of Bavaria, was King Ludwig 2nd's final, most opulent, and expensive building project. His obsession with France's "sun king", Louis IV lead him to create his very own Bavarian Versailles on the Herreninsel (gentlemen's island)

This journey is a romantic trip into the fantasy world of King Ludwig II. Travel includes a one-hour train ride, a short steam train ride to the lake ( in the world's oldest continuously operating steam train!), and a lovely relaxed ferry ride to the Herreninsel where the palace is located.

Personally, one of my favorite parts of this day trip is a visit to the charming "Fraueninsel", where we can stop for lunch and sample a local beer at the Island's very own microbrewery, or we can stroll around the pottery studios and fish huts to sample locally caught fish.
