The Gateway to the World: Historical Hamburg

From a small fortification at the riverside of the Bille to one of Europe's richest cities, Hamburg has undergone many transformations and overcome multiple challenges to become the city we see today. In 1200 years of history Hamburg has been assaulted by vikings and pirates, survived fires, floods and even a catastrophic attack by the Allies in WWII, but it has also been a place for hope for refugees during Luther's Reformation, a melting pot where products and ideas from all over the world came together and a starting point for thousands of people seeking the American Dream at the New World. In this one-day tour through Hamburg's most famous attractions we'll travel through its rich past, starting with the origins of Hamburg and its development during the Middle Ages. After exploring the oldest parts of the city we'll see how the ideas from the Reformation, Industrial Revolution and Romanticism helped shape a new Hamburg. At the end we'll explore the historic Speicherstadt and the modern Hafencity.
