Once upon a time in Berlin lived one of the wealthiest and most educated Jewish communities of Europe with famous characters such as the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, grandfather of the composer Felix Mendelssohn, or Albert Einstein. Let's discover together how this community not so well-seen thrived financially and intellectually through the centuries until an abrupt stop in 1933. Let me explain to you how antisemitism, which is a very old prejudice and hatred in Europe, destroyed a community and also an entire country. It is important to understand the roots of this hatred and how it was used by the Nazis toward people who only wanted one thing, being assimilated and considered as Germans like everybody else. I will bring you to the most moving place for me in Berlin, the train platform 17 in the Grunewald station, from where thousands of Berliner Jews were sent to their death in camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is the last track of their life in the German capital. Let's remember them.
Through this tour, you will understand how the Jews have integrated in the life of the German capital until 1933 and the start of the Nazi's persecution. We will see how some Berliners tried to save them by hiding and hiring them and how these victims are still remembered today. The tour includes these landmarks: - the Rosenstrasse Memorial for the women - the first Synagogue (what is left today) - the New Synagogue (the inside can be added for those who would like to) - the Jewish cemetery of Grosse Hamburger Strasse - the Auguststrasse with the first Jewish Hospital and the Children Home AHAWAH - the Otto Weidt Workshop - the Memorial "The deserted Room" - the Bavarian district and the memorial Places of Remembrance - the Grunewald Platform
